Baseline Assessment of dose due to Natural Radionuclides in soils of coastal regions of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu, India

چکیده
The natural radioactivity due to uranium, Thorium and potassium in soil contributes to the radiation dose received by human beings significantly. Gamma ray spectrometric measurements carried out for the natural radioactivity levels due to Ra, Th and K in beach sand samples around the coast of Kanyakumari district were analyzed. For assessing the environmental radiological impact to public it is essential to evaluate the activity levels of these radionuclides. The absorbed dose rate due to natural radionuclides was also calculated and the results are reported in this paper. The total annual effective dose of the study area founds to vary between 0.94 mSv to 2.23 mSv. This study provides a baseline data of radioactivity background levels in the coastal regions of Kanyakumari district from Muttom to Midalam and will be useful to assess any changes in the radioactive background levels.

Summer time variation and unexpected nocturnal peak in precursors related Surface ozone concentration in air over a tropical coastal regionof Southern Tamil Nadu, India
Surface ozone (Surface O3)is a secondary pollutant and there are only limited studies on ozone in South India. Studies have revealed a strong correlation between higher ozone levels and warmer days. Surface O3 along with its precursors like NO2, CO and CH4 are being measured at Kanyakumari (8.0780° N, 77.5410° E), TamilNadu, India and in this paper we present the summer time variation of ozone ...

Background: Due to the presence of radioactive minerals such as monazite, the beach sand of the west coast of Kanyakumari exhibits high natural background radiation. Hair is a good indicator of radionuclides in the human body. An attempt is taken to measure the 210Po activity in human hair samples and the factors affecting it. Material and Methods: 210Po activity was analysed in 47 ind...

The concentration of selected trace metals (Fe, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in 30surface sediments were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer to investigatethe spatial and seasonal variations of trace metals along Kanyakumari coast, India. Toassess the environmental risk of trace metals, enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index, pollution load index, and ecological risk index have been calculat...
متن کاملBackground radiation and individual dosimetry in the costal area of Tamil Nadu, India.
South coast of India is known as the high-level background radiation area (HBRA) mainly due to beach sands that contain natural radionuclides as components of the mineral monazite. The rich deposit of monazite is unevenly distributed along the coastal belt of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. An HBRA site that laid in 2×7 m along the sea was found in the beach of Chinnavillai, Tamil Nadu, where the maximu...
